FREE LUNCH

RATING

Entry move into Free Lunch

COMMENTS: Free lunch is a unique, experts-only “Freeride” trail recently constructed in the popular Lunch loops area of the Tabeguache. It’s the newest and most challenging trail legally made possible by a collaborative effort by the BLM and COPMOBA.  Many of the trails key features were designed and tested by some of the areas finest local freeriders in conjunction with sustainable trail building organizations. Remember its downhill only but anyone can ride it if you can pass the entry drop. Along the route there are several designated alternate lines where riders can choose between a “black diamond” (most difficult) and double-black diamond (experts only) route.  Some of these alternate lines have wall rides, gap jumps and vertical drops of up to 7 feet.  The trail also offers two designated “Play Areas” of approximately one-half acre each in size where riders will have the option to choose their own line within an area marked with boundary signs.  These two areas contain numerous rocky ledges and large boulders where riders can test their skills.  The majority of the features along the length of the trail utilize the area’s naturally rocky terrain.  Extensive signage conveys trail risks, rules, and directions.

STARTING POINT: Most people shuttle this off the Little Park Road and park in the Gunny Lot and ride down road back to the Eagles wing hiking section. Others will “drop” into the little park Tabeguache entrance from a small lot off Little Park road near the BLM sign and gate then head up Eagles cutoff.

TRAIL TYPE: SINGLE TRACK 100%

ELEVATION CHANGE: -- feet

DISTANCE: 1.1 miles

RIDE DESCRIPTION: 10-15 minute mandatory pedal or push.  Enjoy the Eagles view and pad up.  First drop is the entry feature. Next feature is a rock table top then on to the first play area. Best DH line is straight but far right is a smooth drop. Go back and run the 2 or 3 lines to the left.  Later there is a step up. The next area has a nice drop to a banked transition. As the trail reaches the west ridge there are several ledges, walls, gaps, hips and lines to choose. Finish along some cavernous rock formations and end above the widow maker hill. On our map, the black diamonds signify the major feature areas.
