RATING

Rough Canyon Falls are located just after the start of the ride

COMMENTS: Isolated long cross country ride, partially on the Tabeguache trail. Trail can be ridden in either direction. Enjoy the waterfall in the springtime. Great views of the Gunnison River and Grand Junction. This is a jeep road ride, but worth the trip. Avoid this ride when wet.

STARTING POINT: Bang's Canyon Staging Area - (see overview Tageguache map) From Grand Junction, travel west on Grand Avenue, which turns into Broadway.  Cross over two bridges, at the next stop light, turn left on to Monument Road.  Turn left just before you cross the ditch on to D Rd.  Travel approximately 1 mile to where D Rd ends, go right on to Little Park Rd.  After you turn up Little Park Road, travel 5.2 miles to the Bang's Canyon Staging Area on the left. You will pass the Gunny Parking area at mile 3. The parking is a quarter mile down the road on the left.

ELEVATION CHANGE: 3049 feet

RIDE DESCRIPTION: Begin the Tabeguache Trail (southeast) at the Bangs Canyon parking lot and descend yellow stripped slick rock with a few ledges to the waterfall overlook. There is a short 100 yard hike out to the waterfall at mile 1.8. Next cross the river (mile 2.0) and start climbing up cross canyon. At 4.6 miles take a left on the jeep trail. The Tabeguache Trail continues south to Whitewater. You must make this turn east here. Now roll it to the river. Don’t expect any drops or anything too technical. (Others ride the trail in reverse because this section is less steep than the cross canyon climb.). Now spin along the river bottom. There is a fork at the bottom of Billings Canyon in a flat area at mile12.5. Take the right fork and proceed another half mile to a left turn that goes up a switchback road at mile 13 and climb out. Stay right at Mile 15 where you want to avoid the signed Billings Canyon extreme jeep trail.  At the next junction go left then hit the paved road and return to bangs lot. Have a beer it was a long ride.
